About a year ago I started seeing the faces in parking meters. They could look stalwart or lonely, sometimes quizzical. To me they represent the rise and decline (hopefully) of the primacy of the automobile. Urban centers are caught in the competing needs of drivers wanting more roads and more parking spaces, and city design that favors buses, pedestrians and bikers. Meter Memoirs is a 'meter's eye view' of our changing landscapes.

The world's first installed parking meter was in Oklahoma City, on July 16, 1935. More on their history at
